Lost in leafy light

Do you share a memory of lying under trees, watching the light flicker through the leaves? Did you throw yourself onto the grass and stare into the sky? Did you roll in leaves and kick them down the path on the way home from school, or half close your eyes to see faeries dancing between the branches and the sunlight?

Although Ireland should be covered in trees, outside urban areas the forests tend to be the monotonous evergreen pines planted all over Northern Europe. Sadly there is a lack of autumn glory in this part of the world, here autumn is over and winter has arrived.

But today under this rare group of copper beeches I revisited dreamy schoolgirl moments. Perhaps the world has enough photos of autumn leaves? What the hell, here are even more!

  4. My world never has enough photos of autumn leaves Catherine, and Copper Beech would have to be my favourite tree....if I had to choose. Here in my part of the New World we have rainforest & gum trees, most of which know little of Autumn and drop their leaves throughout the year, or in a drought, or on a whim. It goes without saying that your photos are stunning. I should say that I also have childhood memories of kicking those Autumn leaves and that special swooshing crunch they make. Thank you for taking me back there.

  5. Kicking through crunchy, crisp leaves has been a habit of mine for very, very many years and is still one I enjoy even though I am a few years past the half century. Bring them on I say. Philippa xx

  6. I love the light through these leaves and yes I have a lot of memories of kicking through the leaves and my daughters jumping and rolling in heaps of leaves when they were children.

  10. Copper beech are some of my favorite leaves...so warm and rich...there is one in the city in a cemetery that is about 200 years old and I could sit under it in any season. The same goes for where I live regarding autumn colour. you must go to where ornamental trees are planted to find the colours. Lovely photos.

  11. Beautiful - I love how the light shows up all the tiny details in the leaves :) I remember long summer afternoons lying under trees and having nothing much more to decide than which flavour ice cream I'd buy from the store. Happy days :)
