Some Wood Mouse babes interrupt the weeding..............

We were weeding the small patch of chard which Paddy is growing, in amongst the Rosemary bushes, when three infant Woodmice emerged from their small earthen burrow. All blind they stumbled out and ran amock in the damp earth. We had obviously disturbed them prematurely. As usual I ran to get the camera and managed to capture the little babes before the rain really started to pelt down. Luckily the mother came to their rescue later and they were all duly returned to base.

I am not a great weeder at the best of times and will always cry off if one of the "neighbours" puts in an appearance. I think I am happiest when taking the pictures rather than doing the real work.............

  1. Somehow I find your photos of the wood mice very toughing. I am glad that the mother mouse rescued them later. Now you have a good excuse not to weed: you can't disturb the wood mice ;-)!

  2. Yes exactly! They have a nice cosy burrow in the earth and now that we know where it is we have to avoid it. (What a pity!!

  4. They look so lost! You were very kind to stop your weeding and let them find their way back to home base.

  5. awww cute! I'm glad mama mouse found them and brought them back to safety. Hopefully they've moved "on" and not "in" when winter comes. Nobody likes mice inside (unless they're invited, of course) :)

  6. Oh my goodness, tiny babies (great pictures!). I tried to save some skunk orphans once...And I apologize to tree frogs when I disturb them with watering the lettuces. Really I don't know how any of us ever gets anything done in gardens with all the cute little neighbors to worry about.

  7. How cute! I think interacting with the wildlife is half the fun of having a garden (excepting those wildlife that enjoy causing havoc)!

  9. Thank you for your comments, between here and twitter there was a mixture of delight and extreme squeemishness, which I think I also share. I agree Indie that interacting with the wildlife neighbours is easily as good as the growing part. It's just that I never know when to expect them and I always jump a bit:~) Lovely lovely thoughts and comments, thank you, you are all much appreciated......

  10. Ah blessus! I still think you should send them to Cute Overload and enjoy a bit of well-deserved Internets Fame. Beautiful creatures, although I can appreciate what a fright you must've got when you first saw them..

  13. Babies are always so cute, even when they are mice. (We have an older house and mice sneak in through the crevices in the stone foundation. My husband and I are such pacifists that we cannot bear to set down standard mouse traps. We love trap them instead. Then we relocate them to the nearest field.)
